DAY 01 ARRIVE DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA
On arrival in Durban, you will be transferred to your reserved hotel.
Africa's bewitching seaside playground in the sun, Durban has from its earliest days possessed a special charm – a certain mystique that adds 'something extra' to the meeting of warm Indian Ocean, radiant golden sands and lush sub-tropical greenery.
ACCOMMODATIONS: THE OYSTER BOX HOTEL
Standing majestically on Umhlanga’s prestigious beachfront on the eastern seaboard of KwaZulu-Natal, with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean and direct beach access, the Oyster Box Hotel is one of South Africa’s most distinguished hotels.
The hotel is conveniently situated for easy access to the Umhlanga Village; the Durban city center is a 15-minute drive with excellent shopping centers.
The luxurious rooms are meticulously refurbished; each one is superbly designed to provide the utmost comfort and style. All of the colonial charm has been lovingly preserved – the exquisite tiles, murals, paintings and antique furnishings have all been retained in their original glory. The décor also makes excellent use of natural stone and timber, complemented by calming colors that reflect the soothing shades of the surrounding ocean and tropical vegetation
Whether enjoying sundowners while watching the mesmerizing waves of the Indian Ocean in the distance at the Lighthouse Bar, casual dining with friend at the Ocean Terraces, fine dining with that special someone at the Grill Room, or sinking into a comfortable armchair and swapping stories over a cold beer with a mate in the Chukka Bar, culinary experience of the Oyster Box Hotel is one which truly celebrates the palate.
Other features are the Clock Library where guests can read one of the many volumes or write of their travels, the Infinity pool for a refreshing swim while overlooking the ocean, or the world-class Spa where one can relax. (B)
DAY 02 DURBAN
Today, you will be taken on a game viewing drive through the Hluhluwe (shloo-shloo-wee) Game Reserve which is home to white and black rhino. It also contains the rest of the Big Five; buffalo, elephant, lion and leopard, as well as many other species including blue wildebeest, zebra, giraffe waterbuck, nyala, kudu, bushbuck, warthog, cheetah, hyena and jackal plus impala. You may have some close encounters with elephants as they often cross or block the road right in front of your vehicle.
After a full day of gameviewing, you will be transferred back to your hotel.
ACCOMMODATIONS: THE OYSTER BOX HOTEL (B)
DAY 03 DURBAN
Today’s sightseeing tour is for those with a sense of adventure. Enjoy a 4x4 drive up Sani Pass, the highest road pass in Africa, providing you with a small dose of adrenalin along with its breath-taking scenery.
Afterwards, your journey will take you to the Kingdom of Lesotho where you can get another stamp in your passport. Lesotho is a country in Southern Africa. Known as the Kingdom in the Sky because of its lofty altitude - it has the highest lowest point of any country in the world (4500 feet) and is the only country to be entirely above 3000 feet! Lesotho is totally surrounded by South Africa and is making a reputation for itself as a fantastic adventure holiday destination.
You will visit a tiny Sotho village on the plateau, where the locals will welcome you into their homes.
On your return to Durban, a stop will be made (time permitting) to visit the magnificent Howick Waterfall. Here you will see the Umgeni River plunge nearly 330 feet into the gorge below. Return to your hotel later this evening.
ACCOMMODATIONS: THE OYSTER BOX HOTEL (B)
DAY 04 DURBAN / MPUMALANGA
Transfer to the airport this morning and board your flight to Mpumalanga and the Lion Sands Private Game Reserve. On arrival you will be transferred to your reserved lodge accommodations.
Lion Sands has exclusive access to the Sabie River. From its source high up in the Drakensberg mountain range where it passes through the famous Mac Mac falls, the river through Lion Sands teems with wildlife. It is the definitive safari experience. The relatively cool riverbanks offer a brief respite from the relentless African sun. Splendid parades of animals pass through to quench their thirst at the water's edge and eager predators wait patiently.
The name 'Sabie' comes from the Zulu 'eSaba', meaning 'afraid'. Both man and beast approach the river with care and respect. It is at once a sanctuary of life and a gripping display of survival. It is what visitors from all over the world come to experience: raw, untouched nature. In ancient days, the lush Sabie river basin was overrun by Africa's largest reptile, the Nile crocodile. Today, they bask in the shallows in slightly less numbers, still snapping their deadly jaws at any creature wading in close enough.
Of course, your safari cannot be complete without exposure to every facet of life in the bush. With the highly informative and holistic approach at Lion Sands, you will encounter all spheres of the eco-system, from the smallest insects to the mighty African elephant. Professionally qualified senior ecologists, rangers and tracking teams ensure that your personal safari experience not only meets but exceeds your highest expectations.
ACCOMMODATIONS: LION SANDS CAMP RIVER LODGE
Lion Sands Camp is situated in the greater Kruger National Park conservancy area, in the southern portion of the 250 square mile Sabi Sand Game Reserve. This area is well known for its high concentration of wildlife through both the wet and dry seasons. The southern boundary is shared with the Kruger National park along 4 miles of Sabie River frontage with the wildlife moving freely across the river, between the two reserves. The property’s location is in an area of great diversity of both fauna and flora, and affords visitors unique activities based around the river system and surrounding area. Lion Sands is situated in one of the most pristine wilderness areas in Southern Africa.
River Lodge has river-view thatched rooms with en suite bathroom, shower, game viewing deck and outside shower. There is a private guest lounge, sundeck and bar, swimming pool, an indoor dining area and an open-air boma, conference venue, 3 river hides, and one waterhole hide with hammocks.
The lodge has been decorated in an old African style. The atmosphere is cool, light and minimalist, and both lodges take full advantage of views over the Sabie River. Communal areas are open-plan and extend on to a wooden deck which overlooks the river. The curio shop is situated at the entrance foyer. An array of body and facial treatments are available at the health spa.
